The Sea

After a request from a friend I have posted both written and spoken words.

The sea hails,
As the wind favors the set of sails,
Stretching across the azure waters.
Inch by inch, the fisherman
Pulls the anchor, as he prays
For the bountiful catch.

He wipes the sweat,
The tense lines across his forehead.
As he stares at the skies, just one more
Season, one more good omen.
And then life without the ocean.

What would become of him,
For all he has known
Are the rods, the nets
And these salt burns;
And the fresh smell of bait
He carries with him home.

He knows the language
Of waves, the tides and the full moon.
And even his bleeding hands never
Cease to work, to admire
At the sea’s harvest. For it humbles
Him, and it fills his soul.

Time is short.
As the bittersweet tune
Plays, to the sound of his leaving.
But not so easy does the story go,
As the mistress owns
The mermaid chant; whispering,
I am in your blood,
And I will never leave you.

this brings to me
the old man and the sea
(wow, i've rhymed something;
that never happens).

it also conjures up
images of a small italian
village on the sea.

thanks for that.

Came by your blog purely by chance but really like what I've read. I'll be back for more. Keep it coming!

It can be hard to walk away, even from those things which bless and curse us simultaneously.

Hi!

I wonder:
Where is the fisherman going?
Why is he leaving the sea?

Keep writing!

The sea will always be a hypnotic mistress to all those who live close.
Her comforting smell as you get closer to home
Her noise when she is angry comforts you in the safety of your bed
Her beaches to walk beside her in rain or wind or shine
She is beautiful

I have always lived by the sea, I fascinated and enamored with it....

I was born by the sea and a commercial shipping port.
The port is not so commercial any more but living on a peninsular, I have to drive through it most days. It is sad to see the shipping demise but good to see the residential development overtaking the wharf fronts.
The sea is there every night and the sun setting in to the ocean is a romance of life.
To sit on the beach at night listen to the sea and see the ships on the outer moorings in the moonlight is so peaceful.
But to see the power of nature with lightening streaking the horizon giving daylight to the boats lets you know how powerless we are in the overall scheme of things.
I am sorry for those who havent seen the true romance of the sea

A charmed life?
Well maybe a lucky life in your early years but you have worked hard and studied hard and now travelling hard and seeing the world as a very talented writer with a doctorate to support your passion.
Lucky lady Janete
Come and see Australia before you go back to Europe---we love talented ladies

Hi Clyde

I did certainly work very hard and still do. In fact before achieving the final qualifications I had to put my writing aside for nearly a year. It felt like part me was numb but then it was only a slumber....I am certainly making the most of it now.

Thank you for the kind words, I hope to visit Australia sometime soon! I wouldn't go without :)

Do you write Clyde?

take care

oh an ocean of change for the chance to live this life all over again, except I would try it all this time, and I wouldn't let the little things get to me. I would sail high seas, and spend my days in wonderlust with my ear to the breeze hoping it will tell me something I haven't heard before.

Love the reading, well done. Got more?
